Energy, Carbon Plan Aims for Net-Zero Emissions
In September 2023, UMass Boston launched a new Energy and Carbon Master Plan, which was developed to support the sustainability and environmental justice themes in the campus master plan.
The Energy and Carbon Master Plan provides a practical pathway for the university to achieve net-zero emissions and become a more resilient campus by 2050. The plan aims to operationalize strategies set by the campus master plan to meet state climate change reduction goals through reducing building energy consumption, switching fuel sources and expanding sea-water pump use, building efficient and resilient new buildings, and utilizing renewable energy on and offsite.
These measures will enable UMass Boston to be in compliance with the state Executive Order 594, which establishes milestones for state agencies and operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in alignment with the statewide goal of achieving net-zero carbon by 2050. They are, as well, consistent with our mission of teaching, research, and service for the greater good – in this case, a more sustainable future.
