New Campus Master Plan Launched
In September 2023, UMass Boston unveiled a new campus master plan that aligns the university’s physical campus with its mission and strategic priorities – holistic student success, impactful scholarship, and robust community engagement.
“When we introduced UMass Boston’s strategic plan For the Times last fall, our goal was to build on our distinctive strengths – our dedication to impactful teaching and research in the service of Boston, the Commonwealth, and the greater good; our resolve to be a leading anti-racist, health-promoting institution; our devotion to holistic student success; and our commitment to a sustainable world,” Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco wrote in a memo to the campus community introducing the new master plan. “Equally important was ensuring that Boston’s urban public research university offered a campus environment aligned with and positioned to facilitate these aspirations.”
“The buildings and spaces we design and inhabit shape our lives. Along with functionality, sustainability, and access for all, they mirror our values, and reflect an architecture of UMass Boston’s ethic of care.”
The university finalized a Campus Master Plan to support For the Times with input from students, faculty, and staff during multiple public meetings.
The plan transforms our infrastructure through facility renovation, new construction, and space optimization, shaping a learning environment anchored by four values that reflect UMass Boston’s ethic of care: belonging that highlights our diversity and equity; openness that promotes a community-facing campus culture and encourages connection to the civic and economic life of our city; sustainability that is consistent with our commitment to environmental stewardship; and collaboration that strengthens our capacity to enact For the Times, and curate academic programs around the complex issues of our times, like climate change and health equity.
