Noted for his “astounding technical proficiency and artistic delicacy” by the Boston Musical Intelligencer, classical guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan is an international recording and touring artist. He has five critically acclaimed solo recordings: Tracing a Wheel on Water (2006), New Lullaby (2010), The Legend of Hagoromo (2015), John. Cage. Guitar. (2018), and Nights Transfigured (2020). He is featured as a soloist and chamber music on four other albums for Albany, Navona, and American Composers Alliance record labels. In 2015 he became a Stone Records artists: the first guitarist and American featured on the British label. A sixth album will be released in mid-2021.
He has premiered over 80 compositions and utilizes many of his own arrangements of music by Bach, Scarlatti, Hahn and Spanish composers. His arrangements of John Cage are exclusively published by Edition Peters and include Six Melodies’ for Violin & Guitar (2015), Piano Music Arranged for Guitar (2017), and Bacchanale’ for Prepared Guitar Duo (2019). These are the first officially sanctioned arrangements of Cage for guitar.
Aaron is the founder of numerous commissioning and performance endeavors including the New Lullaby Project: a 21st century commissioning and recording endeavor that asks composers to write classical miniatures in the genre of a lullaby for guitar solo. Since 2007 he has premiered over 60 new lullabies by 55 different composers from six countries. A multi-volume anthology of New Lullaby Project scores is now being published by the American Composers Alliance.
He is also collaborating with composer Vineet Shende for his Carnatic Preludes, After J.S. Bach, a re-imagining of Bach preludes from the Well-Tempered Clavier in a South Indian style, paired with Aaron’s arrangements of the original for guitar.
Aaron has received numerous awards and grants for his performances, commissions and for bringing music into communities, including American Composers Forum, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New England Foundation For the Arts, D'Addario Foundation and many more. In 2019 Aaron received the Médaille D’Etain from the Socièté Académique Arts-Sciences-Lettres of Paris, France for his trailblazing work in music.
Born in Oklahoma, raised in Colorado and living in Boston, Aaron is a graduate of New England Conservatory. He is on the Performing Arts faculty at the University of Massachusetts, and formerly at the Boston Conservatory. He plays a guitar by the French master luthier Olivier Fanton d’Andon, is endorsed by Hannabach Strings, and he loves espresso.
