DeFazio has been teaching at UMass Boston since 2013. He spent 35 years working in law enforcement, including positions as a U.S. Army Military Police Officer/Investigator, Corrections Officer, Deputy Sheriff, and Investigator Assistant Deputy Superintendent. DeFazio retired at the rank of Major from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department in 2016. His fictional novel PROS & CONS (2008, High Pitched Hum Publishing) has been used by professors and teachers as a true-life depiction of the criminal justice system and an "insider's" look at the correctional system and culture.
